The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is proud to announce its call for applications, for ‘Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health Management’ (PGDPHM), running for the fourth consecutive year, August 2011 to July 2012.

Below are the details of the course:

Venue: Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), Delhi, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar.

Course Duration: 1 Year

Last Date of Application: 31st May 2011

Eligibility Criteria:

The course would be open to in-service candidates working with the central, state or local governments, with at least two to three years of experience in the health sector.

Applicants should have MBBS, BDS or B.Sc in nursing/health science/natural sciences or M.A. in social sciences or an equivalent qualification. They need to have been involved either in:

Public health activities at the community, hospital or district level,

In Directorates of Health Services, public health or family welfare,

In other health-related organizations.

Course Fee:

The course fee for self-sponsored candidates is Rs. 2 lakh per year, per participant. The cost for tuition fee is Rs. 1 lakh and cost for boarding and lodging expenses is Rs. 1 lakh. The course fee for international candidates is USD 10,000, per year, per participant (includes tuition fee and boarding and lodging expenses).

Greetings from Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar (XIMB)!

We are organizing a Doctoral Summer School (DSS 2011) during 6-11 June 2011. The theme of DSS 2011 is 'Managing Doctoral Research'. This aims to develop an understanding of the doctoral research process in management and related fields. The participants of DSS 2011 are expected to benefit in the following ways:

· they will have a better understanding of the practice called research and the inherent uncertainties involved in it

· they will be able to understand the process of selecting a broad research domain and identifying a research problem or issue

· they will have an understanding of research methodology and the factors influencing the choice of research method

· they will be better informed on how to document research

· they will be aware of the behavioural skills relevant for researchers

Broad Topics to be covered in DSS 2011:

· Foundations of Inquiry

· Selection of Research Issues

· Forms and Methods of Inquiry

· Reporting on Inquiry

· Social and Institutional Environment of Research

Target Audience:

The participants should be research scholars enrolled in a doctoral programme, or research-inclined individuals who want to pursue doctoral education in the near future.


· Please send an e-mail to the convenor (rahulximb.ac.in) introducing yourself and providing a Statement of Learning Intention (SLI) within 400-500 words. The SLIs should indicate what you intend to learn in this DSS 2011, given your background, previous experiences, and interests. The SLI should be attached to the email as a Word document (.doc or .docx). The SLIs will be taken into consideration to ensure a good fit between the programme objectives and the participants' learning intentions.

· On reviewing your SLI, the convenor will advise you about the programme's suitability given your learning needs

· On receiving confirmation from the convenor, please make a bank draft in favour of "Xavier Institute of Management" payable at Bhubaneswar, for the appropriate participation fee (INR 6,000 for full-time students and INR 12,000 for those in employment). The fee includes lodging and boarding. Discounts on the registration fee can be given on a case to case basis. Foreign participants are requested to contact the convenor for separate registration details. Please send a covering letter (and the payment) to the address given at the end.

Research Assistant in Health Systems Research

Salary: £25,854 - £29,972 (DOE)

70% FTE, Four Year Fixed Term Appointment

MATIND is a four-year EC-funded research project, which aims to evaluate two innovative large scale state-run programs in India that were set up to promote institutional delivery and reduce access barriers to maternal health services for women living below the poverty line through the use of demand-side financing mechanisms. The project is led by the Karolinska Institute, Sweden in partnership with: Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine; the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, India; RD Gardi Medical College in Ujjain, India; and Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine wishes to appoint a Research Assistant for this project, who will be responsible for design, collection, analysis and quality assurance of qualitative data, as well as dissemination of the findings to stakeholders in the MATIND project.

This would be an ideal opportunity for someone who has recently finished a Masters programme in a health or health related social sciences discipline, and is looking to gain further experience to contribute towards a PhD. There would potentially be an opportunity to pursue a PhD at LSTM in parallel to the post, subject to experience and academic record. The main duties of the role would include:

· Assisting with the design of the study and developing research instruments, for the qualitative research component of the MATIND project.

· Providing practical assistance, including training and support, to partner research institutions, particularly in India, in secondary and primary data collection and analysis, and report writing, as well as quality assurance

· Liaising with partner research institutions, particularly in India, to facilitate the delivery of research products (such as reports).

· Undertaking research tasks, including literature reviews and report writing, with potential involvement in field work/data collection and data analysis.

The successful individual must be able to demonstrate experience of working in health or development in a middle or low income country as well as experience in conducting all stages of primary qualitative research (design, data collection, analysis and writing up). Experience in academic paper writing/ evidence of published paper authorship would be a distinct advantage.

Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills are a must, as well as applied qualitative research skills relevant to international public health and good communication skills. Due to the nature of the role, excellent academic writing skills in English would be needed to assist effectively in the project.

The post will involve some overseas travel so the successful candidate will need to be flexible.
